A month inside the beta
Most of the last month on Field of Command has not been glamorous, and that is exactly how it should be. With the beta in players’ hands, the focus has been relentless: daily bug fixes, balance changes and performance work, driven directly by what people are reporting.
It is the least visible kind of progress and the most important. Every fixed crash, every rebalanced engagement and every recovered frame makes the campaign sturdier for everything still to come. Our thanks to everyone in the beta who keeps reporting, arguing and pushing the game to be better.
Back on the content trail: Cassel
The last two weeks have felt great, because the focus has swung back to content, which means the road to Dunkirk is moving again.
The headline is Cassel. It is the biggest fight in the game so far: brigade-versus-brigade combat, up and running on a massive-scale map. Watching whole brigades contest ground that used to host platoon actions is the promotion fantasy of Field of Command starting to pay off, and honestly it is very cool to watch.
Voice line recording is also underway, putting real voices behind the commands and reports. It is one of those touches that makes the battlefield feel inhabited rather than simulated.
Next stop: Dunkirk
After Cassel the campaign arrives at Dunkirk itself, and it is going to be big. The evacuation is the emotional climax of the BEF’s war in France, and it deserves to be more than one more battle map.
That brings new problems to solve, ships and water chief among them, and that is exactly where this week’s work is going. More on Dunkirk as it takes shape.
